Network Addresses and Domains

Addresses
and
Domains

The computer's address is based on the hierarchical system of domains that is used throughout the international network. For example, the fully qualified network address of one of the workstations in 2145 Newmark is :

cehpx4.ews.uiuc.edu

cehpx4 is the specific workstation name;ews is a division of the campus domain (engineering workstation); uiuc is the institution domain, and since the University is an educational institution, it is in the edu (education) domain.

It is not necessary to use the fully qualified network address when connecting between workstations on the same network (i.e., any of the .ews.uiuc.edu machines). When connecting to networks outside the local domain, it will be necessary to use the fully qualified domain address every time.

Local
Domain
When connecting to a machine in the labs, it is necessary to know which workstation you want and its proper address. The workstations are named and consecutively numbered according to location and manufacturer. Locations are gl (Grainger Library) , me (Mech. Eng. Building), ee (Everitt Lab), ce (Civil Eng. Building), and dcl (Digital Computer Lab). The manufacturers are hp (Hewlett Packard), and sn (Sun Microsystems). Thus, the seventh HP machine in Mech. Eng. would be mehpx7 . All workstations are in the .ews.uiuc.edu domain. The workstations available for student logins are:

mehpx1.ews.uiuc.edu through mehpx29.ews.uiuc.edu

glsn1.ews.uiuc.edu through glsn61.ews.uiuc.edu

eesn1.ews.uiuc.edu through eesn47.ews.uiuc.edu

cehpx1.ews.uiuc.edu through cehpx29.ews.uiuc.edu

dclsn1.ews.uiuc.edu through dclsn64.ews.uiuc.edu

glhpx1.ews.uiuc.edu through glhpx40.ews.uiuc.edu
