Campuswide Online Address Book

Using ph       The campus address book is located on a CCSO Nameserver database. This database offers network users an online address book which is accessed by way of the ph command. The database contains directory listings for 60,000 students, faculty, and staff of the University of Illinois. In addition, listings are provided for major University departments, restaurants in the C-U area, up-to-date weather information and U.S. area codes.

In each personal listing the database includes the subject's name, office phone, home phone, address, office address, home address, permanent address, department, title, curriculum, high school and e-mail address. General format of the protocol is request/ response. The client requests information and the Nameserver responds. These listings are accessed by typing:

ph subjectname

Ex: glsn2> ph Doe, John
or glsn2> ph John Doe

Note: ph subjectname return all will provide a more extensive listing.

The two main uses of the Nameserver are to request information and to change your own information. For a more extensive explanation of these aspects the database offers a man page-like explanation of the service. To access this help you must operate in the interactive mode of the ph command. To enter the interactive mode you simply type ph at the shell prompt. Doing this will give you a ph> prompt. At the ph> prompt type help and you will receive a menu of help topics.

For additional information on the CCSO Name Server, you can read the official document at www.uiuc.edu/ccso

Note: The Nameserver service is not meant to create mailing lists. For this reason, requests or queries of more than 20 people are rejected. Attempts to circumvent these restrictions will be treated as system abuse and the responsible party may be subject to suspension of CCSO service priviliges and other penalties deemed appropriate by the University.
