Thu, 10 Oct 2008 02:26:48 CDT http://www.ews.uiuc.edu/announcements/eh_247_access-092408.html Engineering Hall 24/7 Access Due to increased demand for late night Windows Workstations, 406B8 and 406B1 Engineering Hall are now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. After Engineering Hall is locked, all students within the College of Engineering may enter through the west entrance by swiping their I-card. The Linux lab in 57 Grainger, as well as the 4th floor Grainger Windows lab will also remain open 24 hours Sunday through Thursday. Please remember that EWS staff may remotely reboot these workstations during the daily 5AM-7AM maintenance window to install software fixes and apply operating system patches. If you are using a workstation during this time, you will receive notification of the upcoming reboot, and be logged off after five minutes, so be sure to frequently save your work. Remote Windows Desktop access is available on ment1.ews.uiuc.edu-ment45.ews.uiuc.edu from midnight to 4AM. Wed, 24 Sep 2008 14:27:54 CDT http://www.ews.uiuc.edu/announcements/remote_linux_nx-090208.html Remote Linux Graphical Use As an alternative to X-forwarding over SSH using Cygwin or Exceed as an Xclient, EWS is now providing NX access to the remlnx.ews.uiuc.edu dedicated remote Linux servers. NX provides a secure mechanism similar to VNC or RDP, allowing the client desktop to be sent over the network with encryption and compression. The compression and client side bitmap caching allow NX to perform reasonably well even over slow network connections. Instructions detailing the download, installation, and configuration of the NX client software can be found in the EWS User Guide under the "Connecting Remotely" section. The direct link to the NX client setup guide is listed below. http://www.ews.uiuc.edu/userguide/clrtxt/nx_setup/ Tue, 2 Sep 2008 10:04:21 CDT http://www.ews.uiuc.edu/announcements/welcome_fall_2008-082508.html Welcome to Fall Semester 2008 Welcome to Engineering WorkStation Labs! This summer, we've been very busy making improvements to EWS facilities. At 252 Everitt, the lab has been completely remodeled, with a fresh coat of paint and better lighting. The Linux workstations there are all new Dell Precision T3400 workstations with 3.16Ghz Intel Core2 Duo processors and 4GB RAM. At 1009 Mechanical Engineering Lab, we've also replaced all of the Windows workstations with the same Dell T3400's. Effective Monday, August 25, 2008, the Windows lab at 406B8 Engineering Hall will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To enter Engineering Hall after the building is locked, use your I-card at the west entrance. The Linux lab in room 57 Grainger and the 4th floor Windows labs will also remain 24 hours Sunday-Thursday. As always, e-mail manager@ews.uiuc.edu with any questions you have regarding EWS. Have a great semester! Sun, 24 Aug 2008 18:47:09 CDT
