EWS ACCOUNT QUESTIONS

How do I know if I am eligible for an EWS account?

All students in the College of Engineering are eligible for permanent accounts. These accounts remain active while you are a student at the University. Accounts expire at the beginning of the semester after you graduate and are deleted at the beginning of the following semester. The following is a list of majors not in the College of Engineering that also receive permanent accounts:

  • Bioengineering (LAS)
  • Computer Science (MCS Programs)
  • LAS - Engineering
  • Mathematics and Computer Science
  • Physics (LAS)
  • Teaching of Computer Science
  • Teaching of Physics

Students who do not meet the above criteria but are taking classes requiring the use of EWS machines can be issued temporary accounts. Please see your TA or professor if you need such an account. Temporary accounts are deleted at the end of the semester they were generated.

I'm in CS101/110/125 and I need an account. What do I do?

Temporary accounts for CS classes are handled through the TAs for the class.

Please talk to your TA about being given an account. If your TA is unsure of how to create an account, he/she may send a request to EWS Manager (manager@ews.uiuc.edu) to get access to account creation tools.

EWS lab operators cannot help you set up your account.

How do I login to an EWS workstation?

To log in to an EWS workstation, type your network ID and AD password (Note: this is the same as your NetFiles password, not your Bluestem, Enterprise, etc.) in the boxes provided on the Login screen then press enter.

To set your AD password, use the EWS Change Password page.

If you experience trouble logging in, please speak to the lab operator.

How do I logout of an EWS workstation?

It is very important that you log out of th EWS machines when you are finished with them. You are responsible for all activity associated with your account, including anything anyone may do if you leave your account logged in when you leave.

All EWS machines have a button on them labeled "Exit", "Logout", or "Quit". Clicking these buttons will log you out of the machine and return you to the login prompt. If you do not see any such button, please ask the site consultant on duty for help.

I have an EWS account but my password doesn't work. How do I get a new password?

EWS utilizes the UIUC Active Directory (AD) password for authenticating and authorizing users. Please keep in mind that other services on campus use the UIUC AD password. (Note: this is the same as your NetFiles password, not your Bluestem, Enterprise, etc.)

Use the EWS Change Password page to verify that you have an active EWS account. This page will then forward you on to the CITES Passwords Page. From there you can set your Active Directory password and/or any other University passwords.

How can I find out how much print/disk quota I have?

EWS provides the uquota command-line utility on the UNIX systems to help you monitor both your disk and print quotas.

How can I increase my print/disk quota?

EWS rarely extends disk and print quotas. If you believe your coursework requires you to have more space and your instructor has already requested work directories, please have your instructor send email to the EWS Manager requesting the increase of your user disk quota w/space needs. If you have exceeded your EWS print quota, you can use our print billing page to make a billing agreement for further printing.

LAB QUESTIONS

Where are the EWS labs, what are their hours, and what are the hostnames of the machines in the labs?

EWS maintains a webpage with all these details. This page is updated at the beginning of each semester.

How do I check my email on an EWS workstation?

CITES Express email is the university's web based email system. The URL to access the system is https://express.cites.uiuc.edu/.

You can also access your Express mail account via an EWS Unix or Linux command line...

  1. with Pine (recommended) using the command: pine_express
  2. with Mutt using the command: mutt_express

PRINTING QUESTIONS

How do I print in the EWS labs?

Printing is available on the EWS machines. For more information on printing please consult the printing section of our EWS Online Manual.

How can I print more than one slide on a page?

In Unix and Linux, you can use the mpage command. For more information about mpage, see the Unix Command Guide.

How do I use mpage with a pdf file?

mpage will not work with a pdf file. Instead, save the file as a postscript file and use mpage to print the resulting postscript file.

***NOTE: the script pdf2ps is not reliable. Use the above method.

Tray 2 is empty. Can you load it please?

No. Loading both trays 2 and 3 can cause the printer to default to using only Tray 2 in some cases. We load paper only into Tray 3. The machine will print just fine even if it does request Tray 2 to be loaded.

My print job doesn't show up in pq. Where did it go?

This could potentially be a few things.

  • Refresh the queue. It can sometimes take a little while for the print queue viewer to update itself. You can force it to refresh by hitting the R button.
  • You're in the wrong queue. Many of our labs have more than one printer so it's possible the printer your job went to is not the one you're looking at in pq. You can cycle between queues using the Q and V buttons.
  • Your print job may be too large for the print server to handle. If you are on an NT machine and your job isn't going through to the queue, take a look at the NT internal queue (Note: this is not the same as the Print Job Browser). Double click the printer icon if it appears in the system tray (lower right corner) for a long time. If you see jobs backed up or stalled it may mean the front job is too big. You can delete your own jobs, but not others. If someone else's job is backing up the queue, please contact the lab operator for help.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

How can I get to a homepage or do research on the World Wide Web?

EWS offers Netscape and Mozilla on the Unix and Linux machines and Mozilla, Firefox, and Microsoft Internet Explorer on the Windows machines.

Will EWS install software for me?

Probably not. EWS only installs applications for instructional use (in an EWS approved course) or in very special cases for College of Engineering approved applications. You may compile and run packages in your Unix / Linux home directory, but these will be completely unsupported by EWS.

I have an MS Word document, how do I view/print/edit it?

All Windows labs have MS Office installed. On Sun and Linux machines we have Star Office which can edit MS Word documents. You must install Star Office for your account before you can use it.

My MP is giving me an error; can you help me figure it out?

EWS consultants are not allowed to give help with homework assignments. If you are having problems with your homework, please see your TA or professor.

Also, be aware that most consultants will not have a detailed knowledge of your class software. For help beyond the basics, again see your TA or professor.

UNIX AND LINUX QUESTIONS

How do I use a Unix system?

Using Unix is outside the scope of this document. Please reference the Unix User's Manual for detailed instruction on using Unix.

How do I create or edit my files on a workstation?

There are several editors on the EWS machines to use to create and /or edit files. The most common is Xemacs. To use xemacs to create or edit a file at a Unix prompt simply type:

xemacs filename

Where filename is the full name of the file you wish to create or edit. For example:

xemacs temp-file.txt

Other editors include pico and vi.

How do I access my floppy disk/zip disk/CD-ROM from a Unix or Linux machine?

Before you can access your disk, you must first mount it. To do this, place the disk in the drive and from the Unix or Linux prompt type volcheck. The machine will check for any new disks and mount them appropriately. The files on the mounted disk will be found in either /floppy, /zip, or /cdrom. When you have finished using a disk, use either eject-cdrom, eject-floppy, or eject-zip in order to eject the disk.

How can I copy a file from my EWS account to a different EWS account?

The easiest way to copy a file from one ews account to another is through the command scp which stands for secure copy. In order to copy a file using this command simply type scp FileInYourAccount OtherAccountUserName@WorkstationName:Destination where FileInYourAccount is the file that you wish to copy, OtherAccountUserName is the netid of the person's account that you wish to transfer the file to, WorkstationName can be any ews workstation (ex. remsun1 or remsun2 or ehlnx4), and Destination is the directory on the other user's account where you want the file to be placed (just use a ~ to transfer to the user's home directory). After entering this command and pressing enter, you will be prompted for the password for the other user's account. At this point the other user can enter his or her password and the file will be copied.

  • type either pine_express or mutt_express and press enter for Pine or Mutt respectively.

How can I set up a web page on my EWS account?

Setting up a web page can be complicated. You have to create directories and files, make sure the permissions are correct, etc. EWS has created a tool to help you with the process called webperm. It will create a public_html directory and a basic webpage for you. To use it, type webperm at a command line.
