MatSE 390 RJ
Biomaterials for
Materials Scientists
Semester
Project
Purpose
To provide a deeper understanding of a current topic in
biomaterials research than can be achieved through lecture.
Method
From a refereed journal published in the past two years, identify
an article on a biomaterials topic of interest to you.
Prepare a 1-2 paragraph proposal for the topic you have selected
and submit for approval to proceed.
Using the article as a starting point summarize the area of
research described and the context in which the work was done. Among
the questions to consider are-
- What is clinical problem being addressed?
- What are the fundamental biomaterials issued involved?
- What biomaterial(s) are being studied and why?
- What methods are used to carry out the study and assess the
outcome? Are there other methods?
- What are the outcomes and are they meaningful?
- What are the shortcomings in the research and what are
alternatives?
- What are future directions?
Deliverables
- Prepare a poster of your project results addressing the
salient issues in a form which would be comprehensible to a
medical doctor, a life sciences professional, or a materials
scientist. Alternatively you may prepare a web site containing the
same information. Regardless of the medium chosen, the material
should be presented in a clear and logical fashion. Substance is
more important than form.
- Present you project and answer questions from classmates,
teachers, and visitors.
Grading
Project will be graded as follows-
- Content 50%
- Visual Presentation 25%
- Response to questions 25%
Schedule
- Proposals submitted by Monday March 27
- Proposal approved Friday March 31
- Presentations in class Monday, May 1 and Wednesday, May 3
